What is the MetaMask Card?

The MetaMask Card is a Mastercard debit card developed by Consensys — the company behind MetaMask — in partnership with card processor Baanx. Available in 40+ countries including most of the EEA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, and more (US Metal card is now available too), it is the world’s first self-custodial crypto spending card. You spend directly from your MetaMask wallet; your private keys never leave your device.

Unlike every other crypto card — Coinbase Card, Binance Card, Bybit Card — which require funds to sit on a centralised exchange, the MetaMask Card settles transactions on-chain from your self-custody wallet. Supported networks include Linea, Base, Monad, and Solana. Supported tokens: mUSD, wETH, EURe, GBPe, USDC, and USDT. At point of sale, your chosen token is instantly converted to local fiat at Mastercard’s exchange rate with no extra MetaMask markup.

There are two card tiers: the Virtual Card (free, instant, digital-only, 1% mUSD cashback) and the Metal Card ($199/year, physical premium card, 3% mUSD cashback on first $10,000/month then 1%, higher ATM limits, hotel discounts up to 60%, Blackbird dining perks, boosted Aave yield, and more). The cashback currency is mUSD — MetaMask’s own stablecoin pegged to USD — deposited directly to your MetaMask Money Account.

MetaMask Card Pros & Cons

✓ Pros

  • World’s first truly self-custodial card — no CEX, private keys never leave your device
  • Free Virtual card with 1% mUSD cashback on all purchases — no annual fee
  • Metal card earns 3% mUSD back (first $10K/mo) — competitive real cashback rate
  • 150M+ Mastercard merchant acceptance worldwide
  • Apple Pay & Google Pay supported for tap-to-pay
  • Metal: up to 60% off hotel stays, Blackbird dining perks, boosted Aave yield
  • Supports Linea, Base, Monad, Solana — ultra-low gas on L2s

✗ Cons

  • Metal card costs $199/year — needs $6,633/mo spend to break even vs Virtual at 1%
  • Cashback in mUSD only — exposure to MetaMask’s own stablecoin ecosystem
  • Currently 40+ countries only — not yet global
  • Supported tokens limited to mUSD, wETH, EURe, GBPe, USDC, USDT
  • Gas fees apply at point of sale (minimal on L2s, can be higher on mainnet)
  • Requires MetaMask wallet setup — steeper onboarding for non-Web3 users

MetaMask Card: Virtual vs Metal 2026

MetaMask Card comes in two tiers. The free Virtual card suits most users. The $199/yr Metal card makes sense for high spenders who value the premium perks and 3% cashback rate.

MetaMask Card Features: Full Breakdown

🔒 True Self-Custody

Your crypto stays in your MetaMask wallet until the exact moment you pay. No pre-loading. No centralised custodian. Private keys never leave your device. At point of sale, an on-chain transaction converts your chosen token to local fiat instantly via Mastercard’s network. This is unique in the industry — every other crypto card requires exchange custody first.

💰 mUSD Cashback

All cashback is paid in mUSD — MetaMask’s own USD-pegged stablecoin — deposited directly to your MetaMask Money Account. Virtual cardholders earn 1% on every purchase. Metal cardholders earn 3% on the first $10,000 of monthly spending, then 1% beyond that. mUSD can be used for further card spending, held for yield in MetaMask Earn, or swapped to any other token.

⛩ Multi-Chain Support

MetaMask Card supports spending from four networks: Linea, Base, Monad, and Solana. Spending from Linea or Base (Layer 2s) keeps gas fees minimal — typically under $0.01 per transaction. Solana support broadens asset coverage for SOL-based stablecoin holders. You choose your funding network and token during onboarding and can switch anytime in the app settings.

🏢 Metal Lifestyle Perks

The Metal card ($199/yr) unlocks: up to 60% off hotel stays via the MetaMask Travel portal, 7X Blackbird $FLY tokens at top US restaurants (vs 5X on Virtual), exclusive Blackbird dining experiences, boosted yield on Aave DeFi protocol, and $5,000 daily ATM limit (vs $1,000 on Virtual). For frequent travellers and DeFi-heavy users, these perks add real value on top of the 3% cashback.

Who Should Get the MetaMask Card?

🌐

DeFi-Native Web3 Users

Already living in MetaMask? The Virtual card is free, instant, and earns 1% mUSD back from day one. No CEX. No counterparty risk. Your keys, your funds, your card.

🏢

High Spenders & Travellers (Metal)

Spend $6,700+/month? The Metal card’s 3% cashback pays for itself. Add 60% hotel discounts and Blackbird dining perks and the $199/yr cost looks very reasonable for heavy spenders.

🚫

Not Ideal: CEX Cashback Maximisers

If max cashback is the only goal, Bybit Card (10% BIT) or Binance Card (8% BNB) win on rate. MetaMask Card wins on self-custody — a different value proposition entirely.

🏆 Our Verdict: Is the MetaMask Card Worth It in 2026?

4.3/5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒

The MetaMask Card is the most philosophically significant crypto card ever built — and in 2026 it has matured into a genuinely compelling product on its own merits. The Virtual card is free, earns 1% mUSD, works at 150M+ Mastercard merchants, supports Apple/Google Pay, and requires zero CEX involvement. For any MetaMask user this is a no-brainer to add.

The Metal card at $199/year is more nuanced. At 3% mUSD cashback on the first $10,000/month, you’d earn $300/mo maximum before dropping to 1%. To break even on the $199 annual fee vs a free 1% card, you need roughly $830/month in card spend. For active spenders, the hotel discounts (up to 60% off) and Blackbird dining perks add further value that can make the premium worthwhile — but you need to actually use those benefits.

Get the Virtual card if: you use MetaMask and want self-custody card spending for free. Zero downside.
Get the Metal card if: you spend $800+/month on the card and travel frequently — the 3% cashback + hotel perks justify the $199/yr cost.
Stick to a CEX card if: you want maximum cashback rates and don’t mind exchange counterparty risk.

Ready to get the MetaMask Card?

💡 Start with the free Virtual card — activate instantly via the MetaMask app, set your funding wallet to mUSD or USDC on Linea for minimal gas costs, and start earning 1% mUSD on every purchase from day one. Upgrade to Metal when your monthly spending makes it worthwhile.
