What is the Nexo Card?

The Nexo Card is a Mastercard issued by Nexo — one of Europe’s largest regulated crypto lending and yield platforms, founded in 2017 — available to residents of the EEA, UK, and Switzerland. It is the only major crypto card that lets you toggle between two distinct spending modes in a single tap: Credit Mode and Debit Mode.

In Credit Mode, your crypto portfolio (BTC, ETH, USDT, and 40+ others) acts as collateral for an instant credit line. You spend fiat at the point of sale while your crypto stays intact — no selling, no taxable disposal event. Interest rates range from 1.9% APR (Platinum tier, LTV below 20%) to 13.9% APR (Base tier). In Debit Mode, you spend directly from your Nexo balance (fiat, stablecoins, or FiatX) while your crypto holdings continue to earn up to 14% APY daily — so your assets keep compounding even as you spend from the platform.

The card carries zero annual fee and zero issuance fee. FX fees apply: 0.2% weekday / 0.7% weekend for EEA/UK/CH transactions, and 2% / 2.5% for rest-of-world transactions — these are not waived at any tier, so factor them into your international spending calculation. Cashback of up to 2% NEXO or 0.5% BTC requires a minimum $5,000 portfolio on Nexo and applies only in Credit Mode; UK cardholders cannot earn cashback due to local regulations. Physical cards have been paused as of early 2025; virtual cards are issued instantly.

Nexo Card Pros & Cons

  • Zero annual fee, zero issuance fee, zero inactivity fee
  • Up to 2% cashback in NEXO or 0.5% in BTC (Platinum, Credit Mode, €5K+ portfolio)

✗ Cons

  • FX fee on all tiers: 0.2% weekday / 0.7% weekend (EEA); 2% / 2.5% (rest of world)
  • Cashback requires minimum $5,000 Nexo portfolio — not accessible to all users
  • UK cardholders cannot earn cashback (regulatory restriction)
  • Physical card orders paused since January 2025 — virtual card only currently
  • Credit Mode carries liquidation risk if collateral drops sharply in value
  • Not available in the US or most non-European markets

Nexo Card Fees, Tiers & Cashback 2026

Nexo Card Features: Full Breakdown

💳 Credit Mode

In Credit Mode, your crypto portfolio (BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, and 40+ others) serves as collateral for an instant credit line. Every card purchase is charged to your available credit while your crypto continues to be held by Nexo. You never sell — no taxable disposal event. APR starts at 1.9% for Platinum users with LTV below 20% and rises to 13.9% for Base users. Repayment is flexible with no penalties. Cashback in NEXO (0.5-2%) is earned in this mode.

💰 Debit Mode

In Debit Mode, you spend directly from your Nexo fiat, stablecoin, or FiatX balance. Meanwhile your remaining crypto portfolio continues to earn daily compounding interest — up to 14% APY depending on asset and tier. Toggle between modes in a single tap in the Nexo app. Debit Mode purchases do not trigger the cashback reward; however spending from stablecoins or fiat avoids any taxable event. 60+ crypto assets can be used as the underlying earning base in this mode.

💵 Cashback in NEXO or BTC

Nexo Card cashback is earned in Credit Mode and paid in either NEXO tokens (0.5-2% by tier) or Bitcoin (0.1-0.5% by tier). The BTC option is unique — no other card pays cashback in pure Bitcoin at point of sale. Minimum $5,000 Nexo portfolio required for any cashback. NEXO cashback delivers the higher rate; BTC cashback gives more stable, non-platform-token reward value. UK users are excluded from cashback due to local FCA regulations.

🔒 Security & Custody

Nexo holds assets with BitGo, Ledger Vault, and other institutional custodians under $775M+ insurance coverage. The platform is licensed and regulated across multiple EU jurisdictions. Military-grade 256-bit encryption, 2FA, real-time fraud monitoring, and Mastercard zero-liability protection apply. Card management via the Nexo app includes instant freeze/unfreeze, spending limits, and transaction alerts. Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported for contactless payments.

Who Should Get the Nexo Card?

📉

Long-Term BTC & ETH Holders

Don’t want to sell your BTC or ETH? Credit Mode lets you spend fiat against your crypto collateral at 1.9% APR (Platinum) with no taxable event. Keep your crypto, earn interest, and spend via card.

🧾

Tax-Efficient Spenders

In many jurisdictions, spending via Credit Mode is not a taxable disposal (borrowing, not selling). For holders in high-CGT countries, this makes Nexo Card the most tax-efficient way to access fiat value from crypto holdings without triggering capital gains.

🚫

Not Available: US & Most Non-EU

Nexo Card is EEA, UK, and Switzerland only. US residents and most non-European users are not eligible. Wirex (150+ countries) is a stronger option for global availability.

🏆 Our Verdict: Is the Nexo Card Worth It in 2026?

4.4/5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒

The Nexo Card is the most structurally innovative crypto card available in 2026 — and for long-term holders in Europe who refuse to sell their BTC or ETH, it is the most compelling card option on the market. The Credit Mode concept is genuinely powerful: borrow against your crypto at 1.9% APR (Platinum), earn 2% cashback in NEXO or 0.5% in BTC, keep your crypto appreciating, and spend fiat at 150M+ Mastercard merchants — all with zero annual fee and no taxable disposal event.

The FX fee structure is the most legitimate criticism. At 0.2% weekday / 0.7% weekend for EEA transactions, it is not enormous but it applies at every tier — there is no Platinum perk that eliminates it. For heavy weekend international spenders this adds up. The minimum $5,000 portfolio for cashback eligibility is also a meaningful gate. New users with small balances get 0.5% NEXO cashback — acceptable, but not competitive with Coinbase Card’s 4% free or Bybit Card’s 2% entry rate.

Get the Nexo Card if: you are in the EEA/UK, hold $5,000+ in crypto on Nexo, are a long-term holder who wants to spend without selling, or want BTC cashback at point of sale.
Skip it if: you are outside Europe, hold under $5,000 on Nexo, want zero FX fees, or need a physical card (currently paused).

⚠ Credit Mode risk reminder: your crypto collateral can be liquidated if its value drops sharply relative to your outstanding credit. Keep your LTV well below the liquidation threshold — Nexo recommends staying below 50% LTV and sends alerts as you approach the limit. Never borrow more than you can repay without relying on your collateral recovering.
